Arkitema wins school competition in Linköping

Arkitema Architect's proposal Laterna Magica has been selected as winner of the competition for the school Nya Kungsberget in the Swedish city of Linköping. The new school that will have a solid wood framework is setting out to become a center for learning, sports, culture and urban life.

Laterna Magica was selected as the winner of the architect competition with the justification: ”The winning proposal presents itself beautifully and appears inviting toward Drottningtorget. The proposal creates entirely new paths and places in the city and with a unifying ground floor it offers a unique venue for education, culture, and sports”.

“We are both proud and humbled that our proposal for Nya Kungsberget has been selected among many great proposals. Our ambition has been to let education, sports, and culture play a prominent and natural role in the city by integrating the space infront of the building the city’s future and existing spaces and paths”, says Håkan Sandhagen, associated partner, and Head of Business Area at Arkitema Architects.

The main building will be built in robust materials that will age beautifully and last for many years. The framework will be built in solid wood combined with a climate shell of glass that will provide plenty of natural daylight. The building has simple, buildable solutions that can be changed according to changing needs. This offers pupils, teachers and other users the possibility to influence and accustom the physical environment.

“With Laterna Magica we have tried to create a building that is rational and magical, simple and touching. We hope that the building will be a prominent part of the city and that it will hold a special place in the hearts of Linköping's residents”, says Håkan Sandhagen.

The new building is planned to accommodate a secondary school, a practical high school, a cultural school, two sport gyms and public facilities.
